Wild Clay Chaozhou Tea Boat - by Muzuri Ware

A tea boat,reduced to its essential geometry.

This interpretation takes the circular tea boat and gives it a more angular expression. Its straight facets create a defined rhythm around the body before the form tapers down towards the base, shifting the familiar vessel between circle and polygon.

The geometry gives the tea boat a quiet architectural quality, while retaining its essential role in 潮州工夫茶 · Chaozhou gongfu tea. A teapot or gaiwan sits within the upper opening, while the vessel below receives the water from warming, rinsing and brewing.

Formed from wild Cornish clay, hand-harvested by Kyri Mouzouris, the body carries layers of locally gathered clay and river sediment. The material is shaped and fired into a surface that feels less manufactured than geological, uneven, granular and marked by what lies beneath.

The exterior is finished with a layered ash glaze of earthy brown, beige and soft mossy green. Across the facets, the glaze settles differently with every turn, revealing variations reminiscent of weathered stone and vegetation. The interior is left unglazed, allowing the clay to remain exposed to the water it is made to receive.
